Dave White - High School Project - a new Wide Hull

Here are some pictures I thought you might enjoy of the students latest project.

After the Mid-winters last year Andrew Davies visited the school and worked with the students to develop a wide bow design based on numbers we got from Guy Winder, again with Andrews help. Pat Crump has been overseeing the construction details along with Duncan Schaefer and Henry McCray. We began work on her last spring and although we have worked on it steadily the progress on this one is slower then the previous two due to checking and rechecking the measurements as we are pushing the tolerances to 3mm at critical points. Even with that type of control we still have had our problems. Again keep in mind we are working with 10th and 11th grade students. We will have some of the students down in Florida but they will all be crewing for others like Steph the dude and Mike Reid. There will also be two students who just build the boats and do not sail them. Hope you enjoy them and maybe post them on the photo-gallery on the web-page. Talk to you later.

Here are two additional pictures of our boat as we are ready to attach the bilge panels in place. After the panels are in place we will plane and sand the excess material off the panels and then measure the hull as far as the shape goes. We should know at that point if the boat is a legal wide bow or if we have the main contents of our next bon fire.

Here are a few more picture of the students working on the boat. Maybe you can add them to the builders photos. They are removing excess wood out of the forward section of the boat. What they are taking out is the excess chine materials between the bottom panel and the top side panels. They are also removing excess epoxy that dripped from the seams. All in all the boat is coming along nicely.
