Dave White - High School Project - a new Wide Hull. Part II
Here are some pictures of our gang putting a section of deck down.
Basically we did the deck in the standard four pieces and held the
center seam down with screws that were removed and clamped the outer
edges and put a ton of weight to hold the center portions down.
Duncan's group did about the same except he used some type of clamping
system to hold the center seam down as well and he had no holes in his
deck. We are now finished with our boat and both Duncan's and mine
should be at the Mid-winters this year. Looking back on the building of
this boat I can say the wide bow concept is much more challenging then
the standard bow boat and in the long run I'm not sure if building one
will give any of our students an advantage one way or another at their
level of sailing. But It did demonstrate that a wide bow is capable
with the students and therefore very much capable for the average
amature builder. Also understanding the wide bow concept is clearer now
then it was when we first started. We originally thought that all the
concept entailed was blowing the bow out. After talking to many people
over the past two years we have begun to see that the concept is a total
design concept the integrates the rocker, hull sections and the added
bow volume. I believe that if an amature is going to build one, he
first consult the message board and talk to the guys who have gone
before m=him and then make an educated desision as to how he wants to
proceed. I hope this boat will be as much fun to sail and race as it
was for the students to build.
