2003 Fireball North American Midwinters

Davis Island Yacht Club - 7,8,9 March

Now in its 38th consecutive year at DIYC. And in the local tradition, this year the new boat of Duncan Schaefer somehow found its way into the club swimming pool. Built by one of the high school fireball building teams, this is one good looking, and fast, fireball.

We had a light air day on Saturday sandwiched by two days that built to 20 knots or so with lumpy water. In short, great racing, with something for everyone! Pat and Ned were pretty much untouchable no matter what the conditions were, and Gary and Mark were usually secure in second place. After that the results were mixed up a bit, with everyone having someone to race with. The heavy air days proved a bit much for some teams, but everybody went out and at least tried, with some swimming quite a bit. Friday was fairly heavy to begin with, and we were all quite exhausted by the end of the 3rd race. The one mile beats had the fleet spread out quite a bit, and there was no rest for the tail end boats as the next warning gun would sound as soon as they finished. Long time (but recently missing!) 'baller Debbie Thomas showed up to see if anyone needed crew, and got one of the high school kids out for the day's sailing. Saturday was very nice light but shifty breeze for the 10:00 start. Finding and staying in wind proved to be key to doing well, especially as the breeze died while finishing the second race. Four races had been scheduled, but we were towed in after two. In the evening dinner was served at Pat's place. Sunday morning's 9:00 start was in a very reasonable breeze, probably under 10 knots, that built to 20 by the end of the 2nd race. Packing up the tents was a real challenge as the wind continued to crank up higher through the afternoon.

Embossed towels went to 1st through 3rd places, and to the top junior team (Schaefer/Lunk), the Old Farts...er... "Masters" (Mark Miller, sailing with local Ethington), and to DFL (Barbetta/Schwartz).

The club is undergoing extensive rennovations over the next year, and should be a real treat by this time next spring!
