24th Annual Sam Myers Memorial Regatta
July 13,14 2002, Pymatuning Sailing Club, Andover Ohio
Once again the folks at PSC put on a wonderful event. The food was great, the
beer was cold, and the hospitality could not be faulted. Unfortunately the wind
did not decide to co-operate. Frank Ewing, the race chair, capitalized on the
one opportunity on Saturday to get a race in, and all 70 or so dinghies and cats present
hit the water in early afternoon. With all those sails chopping up the little
available wind, starting was a challenge but once going the conditions were
quite sailable, if very light. There was enough wind on the reaches to carry
the kite, as long as one stayed out of holes. Being the fourth start,
Fireballs had to sail up though fleets of FJs, Javalins, and Sunfish on the way
around the course (a simple triangle / windward).
Three Canadian boats made the trip down for the event, and were joined by six
local boats - including the full output of Dave White's high school boat building
venture (consisting of the first boat built by the program, then Lainey White's
personal boat, and a donated and refurbished Rondar).
Fireball results (9 boats) are:
1st: Fred Steward
2nd: Duncan Schaefer
3rd: Phil Locker & Izabela Kurek
The other participants were, in order of finish: Michael & David Braman, Rick Clift & Mike, Mike & Jordan Reid, Dave & Lainey White, Chris Dorrington, and Matt Bliss.
Apologies for not having all crew names or full results... they were not available at the time
Next year is the 25th running of this event, and the club is promising to make it even better than ever!
