Saturday was almost typical Screwball weather - wet, cold and windy... except that it was neither wet nor cold. But it WAS windy. Officially it was blowing between 15 and 20 knots, unofficially I'd say some of those gusts went a wee bit higher. The race committee had planned to run 4 races back to back on Saturday (yes - no break for lunch! A nice change from the usual Screwball tradition of cleaning up for lunch and then putting the wet miserable sailing gear back on to go out again in the afternoon. But I digress...). With the wind cranking and the waves rolling, after 2 races the RC decided to be kind and send us in for a break. At 2:00pm we reconvened out on the water for another 2 races, the break having given some teams a chance to get themselves put back together and ready to race again.
Sunday was a dramatic change from the previous days weather. We went from the screaming reaches of Saturday to staring at the kite and willing it to fill on the runs. A step above actual 'bobbing' weather, the wind was light and variable - those who had a good start and were able to find a bit of breeze did very well. Getting spit out the back of the start was deadly. The race committee got in 3 races, each one shorter than the previous as they brought the windward mark in closer to the start line after every race (with the side effect of making that first reach tighter and tighter each time).
The prize giving was the usual fun filled event, with something for everyone. Whitney and Chris Rennie, up from Toronto, were awarded a lovely toolkit for putting their boat back together, in recognition of them breaking both their centerboard and rudder on Saturday (they were seen paddling in using the remains of their foils). My own crew was awarded ballet slippers for his artful work on the gunwale of the boat (at least 2 backflips were seen during Saturday's racing). Zane and Alice got a sporty little hotwheels car in recognition of their drive from Halifax for the regatta. And there was a roll of tape for the crew who lost his shoe, and another roll of tape for the helm who lost his life jacket. And on and on. Yours truly was given a dartboard to help his decision making, with Peter pointing out that I'd hit the windward mark twice in the same race (I'll point out that Peter was in a position to observe this BOTH times! :)
