Sunday, 06 June 2010 19:23
Fireball Class sailors Guy Tipton and Matt King of Shelburne ended one week at the Internationals', and one week at the Worlds', placing 17th and 24th respectively out of a field of 70 other teams. The two week event was hosted by the Barbados Yacht Club this year.  Even with a deep field of accomplished entries from 15 countries including a number of past world champions, Tipton and King emerged as the top North American team.

" It was blowing 22-28 kts. and  gusts in the 30s', with choppy and breaking waves almost every day. We are not used to sailing in these conditions and we were probably one of the lightest teams in the regatta", Tipton and King stated." We actually feel pretty good. It was a great experience, we learned a lot and met several knowledgeable sailors, organizers and competitors, who were all very willing to share their time and expertise."

Their next goals will be to practice, participate in Regattas' on this continent and prepare for the next Fireball Worlds, which will be hosted by Ireland in 2011.

The Shelburne Harbour Yacht Club sailing duo of Guy Tipton and Matt King were   winners of the North American Fireball Mid-winters this past weekend in Tampa, Florida.

Race Organizers at the Annual Fireball and Friends Regatta had to postpone racing on  the  opening day, Friday, due to severe thunderstorms and tornado watches. Action resumed on Saturday and Sunday which featured a total of seven races. Tipton and King posted 1st in six races and placed 2nd in the seventh race. "This was a great regatta for us. The experience of sailing in similar conditions to the upcoming Worlds Competition in Barbados is very helpful".

Their boat is now being prepared for the container shipment to their next competition which will be the 'Internationals' and 'Worlds' being hosted in Barbados from April 24 to May 7.

Tipton and King second at NA's

Shelburne Harbour Yacht Club's sailing duo, Guy Tipton and Matt King, placed second at the recent 2009 North American Fireball Championships hosted by the Pointe Claire Yacht Club near Montreal.

Facing a variety of wind and weather conditions and intense competition from the top 20 Fireball teams in North America, the host Club managed to complete 10 races over the three day event. "It all came down to the last day and the last race" the duo stated, "and we missed first place by only one point.”

Having won the Canadian Fireball Championships last fall at Nepean Sailing Club in Ottawa, the team considers this as phase two of their three phase plan which will take them to the World Fireball Championships hosted in Barbados in the spring. "We are really looking forward to competing at this level and will be training extensively during the winter and spring season, in hopes of producing some good results at the Worlds," said Tipton.
